Pétanque started in Sligo in the early ninety's in the grounds of a hotel in Rosses Point Sligo. A small club was formed to enter into competition around Ireland and progressed to be involved in Irish Pétanque Association. The club only lasted for about three years but in that time they held a number of successful competitions in Sligo. For Sligo’s 750 year they held their largest competition with a guest competitor Philippe Quintais world champion at that time.
After ten years Pétanque is back in Sligo . In April of 2006 Sligo Borough Council opened a purpose built piste in Micheal Curley Park Sligo.
